Program Description

The Learn to Row program is offered to 6th and 7th grade students who attend the Bromfield School or are Harvard residents who attend a publicly funded charter, technical or vocational school.

The program is offered only on Saturdays , which keeps the time commitment for the kids fun, allows us to provide a variety of activities, gives us access to more equipment and makes it easier for parents to schedule our unique program for their child.

Our goal is to offer a fun fitness program that includes learning to row. The time will be split into activities:

  • A portion on land that includes age-appropriate instruction on activities such as rowing on the ergometer, running, calisthenic circuits, core strengthening and yoga.
  • A larger portion for learning the basics of rowing

We have included time for transitions between each activity to keep the pacing steady and easy for the kids to follow.  Depending on number of participants, they will be split in  to two groups (ideally by grade) and each group with be assigned a starting location.  Example: Group 1 will start at a land activity, then go to rowing. Group 2 will start at rowing, then move to a land activity. This is due to the fact that we have only 8 beginner boats.

On the water, participants will learn to scull in a stable, single-person boat built for beginners. Based on their skill, participants may progress to a two-person or four-person boat. Inter-squad fun challenges and games will keep things lively.

Special activities for parents such as a free rowing lesson and a ride along in the coach boat to see their child in action will be offered.

Periodically,  guest varsity athletes will join the class to provide short stories about one of their special rowing experiences and help with coaching.

Program Prerequisites

  • A  6th or 7th grader who attends the Bromfield School or is a Harvard resident student attending a publicly funded charter, technical or vocational school are eligible to join the program.
  • No experience necessary.
